Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolours. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there.

Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy.

Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts.

This original oil on canvas painting by Henry Robinson Hall depicts a herd of Highland Cattle ascending the slopes of Glen Menteith, in Scotland. The Glen of Menteith leads to the Lake of Menteith, also known as Loch Inchmahome, located on the Carse of Stirling. In the background we see the majestic mountain range, illuminated by the sky in shades of pink and purple, the colours bouncing back from the clouds. In the mid-ground there are smaller, rounded hills with trees, and a stone bridge spanning a gushing stream. We focus on the foreground, where there is gorse, heather and ferns abundant in lush green grass and half a dozen cattle walking along a rough path towards the viewer. The cattle have shaggy coats in rich shades of browns and curled horns. This is a stunning painting, oozing with rich colour and the wonders of this wild natural landscape.
