    About this item

    Important Carved Hamstone Elizabethan Panther

    Late 16th / Early 17th Century

    Ex Sherborne Castle:

Sherborne Castle gifted to Sir Walter Raleigh by Queen Elizabeth I.

The old Castle proved uninhabitable so Raleigh commissioned Simon Basil 1590-1615 to build the new Castle.

Raleigh lived in the house prior to his execution in 1616.

The lodge then passed to the Digby family who in 1620 added four more wings. The house is festooned with carved Hamstone Beasties.
