About this item

An antique mid 19th century Irish elm Sugan chair.

A beautiful early example of an Irish Sugan chair of traditional design.

The elm is well figured throughout and shows a stunning honest patina.

Still with what would appear to be the original rope work seat.

These wonderful vernacular chairs were found in homes across Ireland, with the name 'Sugan' meaning a straw or hemp rope.

This rustic construction method used to form the rope seat may appear simple, however it is ingenious in that the weight of the sitter helps to pull the joints of the frame together.

We particularly like the wear pattern to the front cross stretcher, showing where feet rested for many years.

A rare early example which showcases the beauty of Irish Sugan chair craftsmanship.

Considering the size of the chair we would suggest it was originally made for an adult.

Dimensions:-

Height - 84.2cm

Width - 48.7cm

Seat depth - 34.7cm

Back rest height - 47cm

Seat height - 38cm

Depth - 45cm

The frame is solid, with the obvious age related wear and losses.

This is an early example of traditional Irish furniture which has become incredibly sought after.

Given the rope work seat panel is original we would suggest replacing if the chair is intended to be used. Considering the rope is over 150 years old it wouldn't be feasible for it to still be load baring.

It has become commonplace for these types of chairs to be hung on the wall or placed in the corner of a room, making for a wonderful vernacular display.

With only minor signs of historic non active woodworm, this has been additionally treated for peace of mind.

Given the chair's age the worm damage is surprisingly little.

No movement in the frame joints.
