About this item
An Anglo-Japanese walnut and cane armchair by architect and designer Edward William Godwin, and made by William Watt.
Rare and highly collectable. This armchair is of exquisite form, light, shapely and elegant, with its original rattan cane.
Looking to Japan for inspiration, Godwin’s minimalist style was a reaction to the heavily ornate furniture styles of the mid-19th century.
Largely undecorated, ebonised wood and sculptural lightness of form, all the influence of Japanese Arts and Crafts, are the key ‘signatures’ of Godwin’s pieces and echo the ideals of the Aesthetic Movement.
Godwin was not, however, limited to a singular style as he was also inspired by Gothic, Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Jacobean furniture. Above all, his desire was to create modern, functional pieces that were also exceptionally elegant.
William Watt of Grafton Street was founded in 1857 and is best known for its association with Godwin (1833-1886). Watt’s reputation was greatly aided by the production of Godwin’s most popular furniture designs.
