    About this item

    Satinwood Sheraton Armchair
Upholstered panel back on fluted supports, swept fluted arms on twisted fluted baluster supports, overstuffed seat, tapering and fluted legs at the front and square legs to the back, all on brass cap castors.  Stamped underneath with makers mark "TG".
    English, circa 1840

This chair is made in style and quality of a Gillows chair, the mark "TG" was used by one of the journeyman cabinetmakers working for Gillows in the early 19th century.  Susan Stuart in her book about Gillows (2008, p.240, vol.11) suggests a similarly stamped metamorphic library chair was possibly that of Thomas Greenhall, apprenticed to Gillows in 1830, the stamp bears his initials.

Condition: The frame is in good tight condition, old repairs to the back of each arm, but neatly done, just requires recovering.
