About this item
Henry Stannard (1844-1920) RBA. Also known as Harry Stannard, he was the father of Henry John Sylvester Stannard (1870 - 1951).
Landscape scene watercolour painting of a pasture scene with a gate and sheep grazing in the background. Signed lower left with his RBA notation after his name.
Very clean, having just been removed from its unserviceable frame. In its original mount.
Image within mount aperture 21 x 31 cm, mount 34.5 x 46.8 cm. The customer's details have been written in pencil to the back, which look like Miss Bowden 10 Kew Gardens Road.
In a bid to date the painting we have researched that address through old electoral lists and census returns - and it was occupied for many years (from at least the 1891 census-until his death at the end of 1916) by a Daniel Oliver and his family. He was Keeper of the Herbarium at the Royal Gardens at Kew, he took up painting in his retirement. In 1885 a Robert Michell was using it as a postal address to teach Russian and Mr Michell and his wife were resident there in March 1884 when the birth of their daughter was announced in the London Evening Standard (they had lived at no' 7 in 1881).
