About this item
A wonderful example of an antique Georgian settle, constructed from elm and pine. Originally from Wales and dating from the mid to late 1800s.
With gently reclined high backrest and generous seat, chamfered supports, and raised on protruding sledge style feet.
Visible peg construction used throughout.
A true rare survivor considering the settle is found in its original painted finish. The high back rest has four vertical panels, each with painted and combed decoration.
This rustic folk art style of decoration was produced through applying contrasting layers of paint, then a serrated comb was dragged across the painted surface. This historical decoration was particularly popular during the Georgian and Regency periods. A charming way to enhance ordinary country utilitarian household objects and furniture.
Each armrest is incredibly well shaped, following an elongated scroll form. Both showing well developed time worn patina.
The painted finish shows just the right amount of wear throughout the settle, with some areas consistent with the points of contact. These have revealed the beautiful well figured grain of the timber beneath the paint.
Particularly sturdy for a settle seat from the Georgian era. Ideal to seat two adults comfortably.
Its colourful period decoration, size and styling make it a prefect addition for a cottage interior.
