About this item
A beautiful Chinese scholar's chest with an open light feature and hand-painted images. Historically used to store books and scrolls, the top section has a hand-carved border gracefully outlining the open compartment. The lower half of the chest is painted with auspicious symbols, mainly pomegranates which symbolize family and children, using splendid mineral colors of amber and caramel. Wonderful original, crackled patina. Three removable interior shelves total, one each behind each door/set of doors. Shelf is 15" d x 20.5" wide with space above and under being 10" high. Solid wood. Tenons and mortises.
