About this item
An extremely rare late 18th century (circa 1790) freestanding mahogany pedestal waterfall bookcase of superb patina - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:
This bookcase consists of three graduating storage compartments on either side, six in total, with a moulded edge below.
The sides having an applied mahogany decoration replicating the side profile of the bookcase with brass rosette patera to the top.
This leading down to a quatreform pedestal base with turned spiral baluster column leading down to the four outswept and moulded pedestal legs terminating with four original brass castors.
To one of the sides there is a stamped number ‘15711’, this probably indicating the bookcase being produced by a good cabinetmaker such as Gillow of Lancaster etc. and possibly an item from an inventory belonging to an important house.
Bookcases of this style would usually be found in a private Library, possibly at the end of a desk.
This bookcase is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
