About this item
This two handled porcelain fruit bowl or centrepiece bears the hand painted crest and motto of Baron Scott of Great Barr in Staffordshire. The baronetcy was created on the 30th of April 1806 for Joseph Scott of Great Barr Hall, who was the MP for Worcester. The baronetcy died out in the 1970's. The family crest is a lighted beacon reached by a ladder. The Latin motto "Regi Patriaeque Fidelis" translates as "Faithful to my King and Country". The crest and motto is shown on both sides of the bowl and in the centre. The bowl is quite thickly potted and in very good condition with only some very minor wear to the gilding around the rim. It measures 360 mm (14.25 inches) in length, 245 mm (9.75 inches) in width and it stands 87 mm (3.5 inches) high. It dates from around 1810 and it is possible that the dessert set from which it came was commissioned to celebrate Scott's elevation to the peerage.
