    About this item

This wax impression of a seal is housed in a turned lignum vitae box measuring 38 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter and 10 mm (3/8ths of an inch) thick. The coat of arms on the seal is supported by two lions below a baron's coronet. Beneath the coat of arms is the Latin motto "Non quo sed quo modo" (Not for whom but in what manner) which is the motto of Baron Seaford of Sussex. The Baronetcy was created in 1826 and this seal might have been made around that date. The inside of the lid carries a very detailed example of the engravers art and the name and address of the engraver Halfhide & Co. of Coventry St London. According to his label on the inside of the lid, George Halfhide was "seal engraver to His Majesty, and the Dukes of York, Cumberland and Sussex". Later on he was the official engraver to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. There is a small chip in the side of the lid..
