About this item
Introduction to Chinese Scholar’s and Decorative Boxes
Chinese scholar’s and jewellery boxes from the late Qing to early Republic period were crafted not merely for storage but as reflections of social status, moral virtue, and auspicious intent. Artisans selected dense hardwoods such as huanghuali, zitan, or local equivalents to create fine cabinetry scaled for domestic and literati use.
Description of the Box
This well-made example is constructed from solid hardwood framed in lighter timber with inset panels of rich, dark rosewood tone. The front is finely inlaid with bone decoration depicting vases and floral arrangements from the “hundred antiques” theme - symbols of refinement, learning, and abundance. A pierced butterfly lockplate decorates the clasp, representing marital harmony and joy, while the interior lid bears the character 壽 (shòu), meaning “longevity”. Together, these motifs confirm the piece’s use as an auspicious gift, likely for a wedding or significant birthday.
The interior opens to reveal two small drawers over a single deep compartment, each fitted with original brass pull plates. The structure is completely hand-finished with dovetail and mortise joinery, displaying fine cabinetmaking of the southern coastal tradition, most closely associated with Guangdong workshops active around 1900.
Condition
Light marks, minor wear, and small finish losses consistent with age and use. Overall well preserved with a pleasing surface tone and stable joinery.
Why You Should Buy
It’s a piece that feels alive with memory. The kind of box you can imagine once filled with letters, brushes, or keepsakes, still carrying that quiet dignity of a life well-lived and cared for.
