About this item
A bronze kumkum box, made in India in about the mid 20th century. The box is made to hold either spices or kumkum, a powder made out of ground turmeric which, when mixed with water is used to make social and religious markings on the body, usually on the forehead. This charming little box is in the form of a peacock standing on top of a lotus flower. Each of the seven petals of the flower is a compartment which would have held a different coloured powder. The box opens by unscrewing the peacock, allowing the hinged tops of the petals to open.
