About this item

Introduction to Chinese Export Pewter

The coastal city of Swatow rose to international prominence during the late nineteenth century as the primary hub for Chinese pewter production, driven by a regional guild system that perfected the art of sand-casting high-tin alloys. These workshops specialised in the creation of airtight tea caddies, utilising sophisticated precision-fit lids specifically engineered to preserve the volatile oils of high-grade tea leaves during long-distance maritime transport. The aesthetic was defined by dense, hand-chased narrative engravings which served as a luxurious bridge between traditional domestic metalwork and the demanding requirements of the Western export market.

Description of the Swatow Caddy

This antique tea caddy is a perfect example of Swatow craftsmanship, featuring a substantial cylindrical form and a precision-fitted lid. Every surface of the pewter is utilised as a canvas, displaying a dense narrative of birds in flight and perched amongst flowering plum or cherry branches. The engraving is remarkably textured; the artisans used a fine stippling technique to punch thousands of tiny dots into the background, allowing the smooth, polished figures of butterflies and blossoms to stand out in relief.

The base is clearly struck with a traditional circular workshop mark, anchoring the piece to the famed metalworking district of the Chaozhou region. The pewter has matured into a dignified, silken patina that highlights the depth of the chasing, while the interior remains clean and functional. The base is struck with a traditional circular workshop hallmark that identifies the elite 'Chao' region of Swatow and includes the 'Bu Er Jia' (No Second Price) stamp - a historical guarantee of material purity and fixed pricing common to premier workshops like Kut Hing.
