The Essentials
Chinese Canton enamel box and cover Painted enamel on copper 19th century, Guangzhou Lid painted with a European lady portrait Light surface wear, overall in good conditionDescription
This is a Chinese Canton enamel box and cover, with a European lady portrait to the lid. Canton, now Guangzhou, was the main Chinese port for foreign trade, and small enamel boxes were sometimes made for buyers special commission.
The portrait is of a fashionable European woman, with fair hair, red jewellery, a draped dress and a garden landscape behind her. The box was probably made for snuff, pills or small personal items.
Cross-cultural pieces like this are now rarely found.
