About this item
Early English boarded writing box, with chip carving extending over the top and to all four sides. The lid opens on a very fine pair of brass strap work hinges to an interior with divisions for writing implements, inkwell and sander.
These boxes are frequently dated to the mid 17th century; however this one is inscribed to the base, Charles Bawden July 27 1745, Bawden being a Celtic name that is often associated with Cornwall. One is kept wondering about the relevance of the day and the date and if it is contemporary or added at a later date.
