About this item
Opera trunks were used in the 19th century by touring opera companies to house their costumes. The beautiful decoration was to help advertise how fabulous the company was. This trunk is lacquered wood with hand painted decoration to the front face depicting a group of figures under a canopy roof on a black ground. Circa 1880. Original latch. The box is constructed from a close grained wood, probably Chinese elm or Wotan.
Very good condition with wear to the surface comenserate with age.
