About this item
The Essentials
Mamluk Revival covered jar 19th century, Egypt or Syria Brass with silver-inlaid calligraphy and engraved decoration Good antique condition with surface wear Arabic blessing inscription and blazon roundel to the lidDescription
This is a 19th century Mamluk Revival silver-inlaid brass covered jar, made in Egypt or Syria. The main band carries an Arabic blessing to the owner, wishing lasting honour, growing prosperity and long life.
The decoration comes from the metalwork language of the medieval Mamluk courts, with bold calligraphy, arabesque scrolls, punched ground and a blazon roundel on the lid.
It is the kind of small Islamic metalwork that gives a cabinet or desk a proper point of interest, because the inscription and the roundel both have deep meaning.
