The Essentials
Newlyn Arts and Crafts copper casket Circa 1900–1910 Hand-hammered and planished copper over a wooden carcass Pierced strapwork, riveted fittings, swing handles and paw feet Marked HG, a mark known on other Newlyn piecesDescription
Made at Newlyn in Cornwall around 1900, this substantial copper casket is marked HG, an individual mark also recorded on some Newlyn pieces. The domed body has been hammered throughout, with pierced copper straps, corner mounts, hinges and rivets all deliberately incorporated into the design.
The raised paw feet, side handles and broad central fastening give it the construction of a miniature coffer, with the decoration coming directly from the way each piece of copper has been cut, punched and assembled. It is a particularly exceptional example of Newlyn metalwork, using the practical structure of the box as part of the design itself.
