About this item

Introduction to Canton Enamel

Canton enamel, also known as painted enamel, has been a popular decorative art form in China since the 18th century. Made by applying vibrant enamel to copper, these pieces were often decorated with floral, landscape, and symbolic motifs. The technique became especially prominent in the late Qing and early Republic periods, with artisans creating richly coloured designs that showcased their mastery of enamel painting.

Description of the Canton Enamel Tray and Box

This set includes a small Canton enamel tray and a lidded box, both dating to the early 20th century, during the late Qing to early Republican period. The tray is adorned with flowering branches and a central butterfly, against a white ground that highlights the vibrant colours. The lidded box features a yellow ground with floral and vine patterns, demonstrating the fine detail typical of Canton enamel pieces.

The tray shows some damage, with exposed copper on the back and minor wear on the front, while the box is in good condition. The box measures 10 cm in diameter, and both items are lovely examples of early 20th-century Canton enamelware.

Why Should I Buy?

The vivid floral and butterfly motifs, along with the contrasting white and yellow grounds, make them eye-catching additions to any collection.
