Papier Mache Card Case

This papier mache card case is decorated on both sides with a central spray of inlaid mother-of-pearl flowers and leaves highlighted in red . This is contained in a large red and gilt frame with painted highlights. The strapwork borders are inlaid abalone shell delineated with gilding and red paint. The corners also feature mother-of-pearl with gilt outlines. The edges of the opening are lined with ivory and the interior is lined with red velvet. There is a small silver panel set into the top of the lid for the owners initials, which is blank. The length is 117 mm (4.5 inches), the width 71 mm (2.75 inches) and it is 10 mm (3/8ths of an inch) thick. There is some loss of the gilding and the loss of the top of the small stud below the button press. C 1855.
