About this item

Introduction to Cairoware and Mamluk Revival Metalwork

Cairoware is the collector’s term usually used for brass and copper alloy work made in Egypt, and sometimes Syria, in a historic Islamic style. Much of it was produced in the late 19th and early 20th century, drawing on the great inlaid brass tradition of Mamluk metalwork from medieval Cairo and Syria.

Description of the Wall Plaque

This is a circular brass plaque or small tray with a broad rim and a neatly ordered central design built from lobed cartouches and a roundel. The whole face is arranged in the old Cairo taste, with stylised Arabic calligraphy set against finely engraved grounds.

Silver coloured script runs through the main cartouches, while copper details add warmth to the central medallion and some of the borders. It has the sort of decorative confidence you want from Cairoware.

Condition

There is general age related wear. Overall in good condition.

Why You Should Buy
