About this item

The Essentials

North Indian brass charger dating to the late 19th century Benares or Moradabad brassworking tradition Hand chased and engraved with dark recessed detail Mamluk style calligraphic medallions, stars and geometric ornament With age patina and a later hanging fitting

Description

A large late 19th-century North Indian brass charger covered from edge to centre with hand-worked Islamic revival decoration. Circular medallions combine angular script, six-pointed stars, flowerheads and scrolling palmettes, divided by tightly engraved geometric borders.

The design draws directly on the Mamluk metalwork being revived during the period, while the darkened engraving belongs to the brassworking tradition centred around Benares and Moradabad. Nearly the entire surface has been worked by hand, bringing North Indian metalworking and late 19th-century Islamic revival design together in one piece.
