About this item
Introduction to Islamic Revival metalwork
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Egyptian workshops began recreating the grand metalwork traditions of the Mamluk period for a new audience of collectors and travellers. These pieces used historic designs and techniques, including brass bodies with inlaid Arabic script in silver and copper. The revival movement became especially associated with the Khan el-Khalili district of Cairo, where skilled craftsmen supplied both local and export markets.
Description of the tray
This is a large round tray with a raised rim and gently recessed centre, designed for wall display. It is made from brass and measures 49cm across, with a later triangular hanging loop attached to the reverse.
The surface is richly worked with incised and punch-decorated foliate patterns. At the centre is a circular medallion inlaid with Arabic calligraphy in thuluth script using silver and copper. Around this are six smaller roundels alternating between calligraphic inscriptions and geometric motifs. The background is filled with dense scrollwork and texture, with the outer rim decorated in a continuous engraved border.
Condition
There is a dent to the rim and small areas of inlay loss. A later metal loop has been soldered on for hanging. In good condition overall.
Why You Should Buy
The silver and copper script draws your eye in straight away, a fine representation of this incredible metalwork.
