About this item

Introduction to Mining Lamps

E. Thomas & Williams, based in Aberdare, Wales, is known for producing some of the most widely used safety lamps in the mining industry. These lamps were essential for detecting dangerous gases and providing light deep underground, where conditions were treacherous. Welsh miners relied on these lamps not only for safety but as a symbol of their tough and resilient communities. Today, these lamps are valued by collectors as reminders of Wales’s rich industrial past.

Description of the Miners Lamp

This rare small Welsh brass miners’ lamp by E. Thomas & Williams was specially made to commemorate the investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in 1969. The lamp features a presentation plaque marking the occasion, celebrating both Welsh industrial history and a significant royal event. Made at the Cambrian Works in Aberdare, the lamp is a unique piece of history, produced in limited numbers.

Measuring 6 inches in height, the lamp comes with its own wooden stand and remains in good condition, although sold as untested. Its brass surface shows minor signs of age, reflecting its journey through time. This is an exceptional item for anyone interested in both Welsh heritage and Royal history.

Why You Should Buy

This lamp is a rare find, combining the legacy of Welsh mining with the history of the 1969 investiture of the Prince of Wales. With its special presentation plaque and original wooden stand, it is more than just a collector's piece - it’s a celebration of two important historical moments.
