About this item

Introduction to French Decorative Brassware

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French foundries produced a wide range of decorative brassware for formal interiors. These included planters, stands, and ornamental holders, often featuring intricate Rococo and acanthus designs cast in relief. Many combined both ornamental appeal and practical function.

Description of the Planter

The planter features a flared cup-shaped body in openwork brass, cast with scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs. The pierced design allows light to pass through, enhancing its decorative presence. The upper section narrows to a short stem above a stepped, circular base.

The base is moulded with fluted panels and gadrooning, providing a visual anchor for the more elaborate upper section. The brass surface retains traces of its original gilding, now mellowed to a rich, variegated patina that emphasises the relief detail. The piece has a flat inner plate within the bowl section, allowing for use with a liner or as a display stand.

This example reflects the Belle Époque taste for ornate yet functional decorative metalwork, and its form suggests possible use as a tabletop jardinière, centrepiece, or stand for displaying fine objects.

Condition

Surface wear and patina from age, including oxidation in recessed areas and rubbing to gilded highlights. Structurally stable and free from major damage.

Why You Should Buy

Its ornate openwork design and mellowed gilt finish make it a striking accent piece that enhances both period and eclectic interiors.
