About this item
A lovely Art Nouveau rolled gold (marked 18ct rolled gold), turquoise and pearl bow brooch. In very good condition.
Rolled gold is a hybrid material comprising a thin layer of gold that's mechanically bonded to one or both sides of a base metal (usually brass or copper). Rolled gold was patented in 1817 and it became a prime source for semi-precious jewellery in the Victorian era. Using rolled gold allowed designers to create and sell intricate pieces without the cost associated with solid gold. The thickness of the gold is generally at least 5% of the total metal weight. It is hypoallergenic and shouldn't cause problems for anyone with skin sensitivities to other metals.
We could convert this to a necklace should you wish.
