    About this item

A small 17th century Flemish oak cabinet on stand. The base has a shaped frieze above four turned bulboius legson to flat stretchers and turned bun feet. The top with finely carved cornice above two arcaded doors with wonderful carved heads, above a single drawer. The ends are also arcaded with small carved masks.A most interesting cabine tin original condition throughout with fine ebony inlaid decoration.Flemish Circa 1650.The cabinet was formerly at Llanwern Park ,Monmouthshire, the seat of Viscount Rhondda, but the house ,built Circa 1750,was pulled down in 1950.The inside panel of the cabinet's right door bears the label Sybil Rhondda,Llanwern and there is an old label Tudor Guild Cupboard at the top inside of the door. The cabinet was believed to have been passed on to her daughter Margaret who also retained the title Lady Rhondda,by special remainder, something her father had insisted on from King George V when he was offered the title. She was an active suffragette and leading campaigner for women's rights(Wikipedia) and also a survivor of the Lusitania, she died aged 75 in 1958. Lady Rhondda was one of five women shortlisted in 2019 to be portrayed in the first statue of a woman to be erected in Cardiff. For her life story see Wikipedia.
