About this item
Beautiful marble bust of a young woman, presented on an ebonised wooden socle. Signed L.Madrassi.
Luca Madrassi was a French sculptor of Italian origin of the 19th century. Born on the 8 June 1848 in Tricesimo, Italy, and died April 7, 1919, in Paris. He began his artistic studies in Rome before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under the tuition of Pierre-Jules Cavelier. He then joined the renown Carrier-Belleuse studio. Between 1876 & 1880, Madrassi was apractioner of Gustave Doré. This explains the analogies between the works of Carrier-Belleuse and Doré. He exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists in Paris from 1879. While there, he gained several honorable mentions [1881, 1882, 1883, & 1885] as well as a third class medal in 1896. Madrassi obtained French nationality and became a member of the Societé des Artistes Française in 1890. He also exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1896.
