Altar Cabinet With Carved Spandrels

This substantial Beijing sideboard from circa 1880 exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of late Qing dynasty furniture. Constructed from elm wood, the cabinet showcases a warm, deep brown patina developed through generations of use, with a lustrous finish that accentuates the natural grain and subtle surface wear. The piece features three upper drawers with original circular metal pulls, positioned above a pair of central paneled cupboard doors fitted with traditional brass hardware. The aged metalwork complements the wood's richness beautifully. Particularly noteworthy are the delicately carved openwork spandrels flanking the cabinet, depicting scrolling foliage with remarkable precision—a testament to the craftsman's skill and the owner's status. The gently overhanging top with everted flanges creates a balanced silhouette. Inside, the removable centre post between the doors maximises storage accessibility. Originally serving dual purposes in affluent Beijing households—storing textiles and tableware whilst functioning as a family altar table—this cabinet remains a versatile statement piece combining practical storage with historical significance and decorative elegance.
