Black Lacquer Painted Double Cabinet

An exceptional Shanxi cabinet from circa 1830, handcrafted from elm wood and adorned with a lustrous black lacquer finish that has developed a beautiful patina over nearly two centuries. The front doors showcase exquisite painted decoration featuring auspicious floral sprays, songbirds symbolising happiness, and a crane representing longevity—rendered in rich reds, ochres and gold leaf. Hand-carved and painted spandrels frame the outer uprights, largely preserving their original colouring. The interior comprises two sets of double doors, each opening to reveal a spacious compartment with a central fixed shelf and shallow drawer—characteristic of early Qing period Shanxi craftsmanship. Authentic period hardware, including round lock plates and shaped hinges, bears the gentle wear of its age. This distinguished piece transcends functional storage, serving as a compelling focal point in dining rooms, hallways or living spaces whilst complementing both traditional and contemporary design schemes.
