    About this item

Dutch satinwood encoignure, or corner cabinet
Satinwood and kingwood barber's pole stringing, crossbanded in kingwood, the top and doors with central central medallion, the hinged lid opens to a void, a dog tooth frieze and a pair of dummy drawers, below a pair of cupboard doors open to a single shelf, the bottom rail with a shaped frieze and square tapering legs.
Dutch, circa 1790. Typically Dutch styling with the barber's pole stringing and tapering legs, although these designs were much copied up to 1900 the construction and quality of this piece date it to the end of the 18th century.  This fabulous corner cabinet was designed as a wash stand, opening the top would reveal a wash bowl, the board to hold the bowl is still beneath the later top board, this could be converted to accommodate an inset sink for a bedroom or washroom, alternatively it would make a great bar for serving drinks in a drawing room.  A great looking piece of furniture and a good scale to make use of the corner of a room.

Condition: The whole piece is in very good useable condition, the satinwood is of good golden colour, it shows signs of shrinkage most noticeably to the top, the left door has some patches to the veneer and a small piece of veneer is missing to the back.  Because the doors have shrunk the cover strip between the doors is a later addition.  Two holes have been made in the backboards, we presume for wires.
