Painted Gansu Side Cabinet, 1900s

This exceptional Gansu cabinet, dating to circa 1900, represents authentic regional craftsmanship from eastern China. Constructed from poplar wood, it exemplifies the traditional storage aesthetic of Gansu and Inner Mongolia, originally engineered for grain storage with a removable half-board lid. The piece has been thoughtfully adapted for modern interiors with a single door mounted on wooden dowels, maintaining historical integrity whilst enhancing functionality. The cabinet's distinctive palette—deep black lacquer framing complemented by red and cream door detailing—reflects the characteristic colour schemes of the region. The lower drawer's naturally weathered finish, where orange lacquer has worn away to reveal the underlying poplar, contributes genuine patina and visual depth. A removable internal shelf provides flexible storage solutions for bedrooms or living spaces. This is a rare opportunity to own an authentic piece of Chinese vernacular furniture with considerable historical and aesthetic merit.
