Red Lacquer Shanxi Cabinet With Gold Decoration

A distinguished Shanxi cabinet from circa 1820, this elm-wood piece exemplifies the region's mastery of lacquerwork and gilded decoration. The lustrous red finish—traditionally associated with prosperity in Chinese culture—has developed a beautifully aged patina that reveals underlying texture and depth. Intricate gilt roundels adorning the front feature symbolic motifs: cranes and deer signifying longevity, flowering branches representing harmony, and children at play expressing wishes for familial happiness. A painted pomegranate spray graces the lower panel, its seeds symbolising abundance and fertility. The original brass lock plate has darkened to a rich tone that complements the lacquer perfectly. Inside, two small drawers occupy the upper compartment, whilst the spacious lower chamber provides practical storage. This versatile piece brings both historical significance and functional elegance to contemporary interiors, whether displayed as a striking focal point or utilised as a cabinet for linens, tableware or beverages.
