About this item
A fine example of an early 18thc single "bell metal" candlestick...it stands on a wide slightly raised octagonal base which dips in the centre for the collection of any wax overflow....a feature that becomes more pronounced in later examples.....the column is turned separately from the base and has an inverted acorn central knop, typical of early 18thc candlesticks....the candle socket has a good length with one lateral aperture for ejecting the burnt down candle....the column and socket are joined to the base by "peening" over the end of the column.....in very good condition with no repairs or soldering.
French. C1700-10.
