    About this item

An original early Victorian cast iron fire insert and antique pine fire surround. The surround and insert are of a petite size, ideal for a bedroom, and have a pretty and traditional design. The cast iron insert has an arched opening with repeating circular borders. The fire retains its original curved front bars and top plate with a pretty star motif. The insert has a kite dating mark on the back of its top plate. The kite mark is difficult to read but we can date the fire to pre 1883 when the dating system changed. The pine surround has been sanded to bare wood and has a simple design with mouldings under the mantel and along the crossbar. There is a small gap between the inside opening of the surround and the outside edges of the insert as the insert is very slightly smaller than the surround opening. We could add beading to the inside edge of the surround to cover this gap, if required, for an extra charge. Please contact us for details and a quote. The surround and insert have some signs of age and wear, as expected of antique items. There are some small nail holes and splintering to the wood. The feet have some knocks and the feet edges are uneven and have knocks and holes. The crossbar has some splits and the right hand moulding under the mantel is slightly loose, however the surround is stable. The cast iron insert has some small casting marks and scratches and there are some knocks to the fire brick and some tarnish to the sides of the burning area. The back has surface rust as expected.  Please see pictures for condition details. The fire insert and surround have a nice period appearance and would add great traditional character to a home.
