FS0446 A VERY LARGE ORIGINAL VICTORIAN ORNATE PAINTED CAST IRON FIRE SURROUND

A very imposing and ornate reclaimed Victorian cast iron fire surround. The surround is of a very impressive size and has a fantastic design with stunning acanthus leaves, swags and scrolls along the crossbar. There is dentil moulding and a corbel under the mantel. The crossbar has curved moulding and there are scrolled, shaped details at the ends. The legs are very nicely shaped and have ribbon designs. The mantel has a registered design number, RD303676, dating the surround to 1897. The iron has been painted white. The fire surround is very large and the heavy and wide mantel is double skinned, with one part designed to slot into the other. The surround has been paired with two thick wooden batons, one to be attached to each leg, that are then attached to the wall to assist in fixing the surround as the mantel is very deep and will not sit against the wall properly. The wood has been painted white to blend in with the surround and has chamfered detail. You could trim the mantel and remove the wood if you preferred. The surround is in solid reclaimed condition with some signs of age, as expected. The paint has some losses, especially to the mantel and under the mantel. There are some stains to the paint and a dark mark on the mantel. The iron has some small knocks. The back of the surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is a stunning example of Victorian design and it would make a truly special feature for a fireplace.
