    About this item

A fine example of an 18th century (circa 1760) George II mahogany tripod table retaining superb original and rich patina - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This table consists of a solid mahogany tilt top with pie-crust edge with original patina and rotating birdcage mechanism allowing the top to revolve.

This leads down to a ring turned with acanthus carved baluster column with egg and dart carved collar all supported on a tripod base, the carved cabriole legs with acanthus carved decoration to the knees and terminating with ball and claw feet.

The carved tripod tables of the 18th century provided an example of fine carving on a domestic item, the tripod table still being very desirable and also serving a purpose and continuing to be the highlight of some present day collections.

The drinking of tea became fashionable amongst the upper classes at the beginning of the 18th century and a ‘tea table’ was used to display the best silver and china, not being covered with a table cloth like a supper table they were decorated with carving, a gallery or a pie-crust edge.

The tea table usually having a bird cage mechanism allowing the table top to fully rotate around the column, this being a unique design in the 18th century, the base also being well executed and the patina being very important.

This tripod table is in very good condition for age retaining superb original and rich patina, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
