About this item
A rare English Delft colander bowl, c.1760, possibly London. The outside is painted in cobalt blue on a pale blue ground with Chinese landscapes of buildings, trees and mountains with a decorative border and the top with a starburst effect painted in concentric rings. The outer ring has decorative symbols painted in reserves bordered with alternating diaper patterned panels. The top has pierced drainage holes running within the circular bands with a larger central hole. On the side is a pouring slot framed with scrolls and with a green man type mask below it.
It measures 8 7/8" (22.7cm) wide and 3 1/2" (9cm) high.
Condition is very good: there is a shallow chip near the rim on the side, mainly glaze level, extending a bit further into the body nearer the top. A further shallow chip on the rim and some light fritting to the glaze at points on the rim. There are some hairlines between some of the holes on the top.
