19th c. Japanese Imari Bowl
A fine quality Meiji period, Arita Imari bowl of subtle lobed form with floral motifs interspersed with dragons ornamented with gilt highlights. The interior base is decorated with a phoenix igniting into a magnificent fire symolising rebirth and renewal. The combination of a dragon (yang) with a phoenix (yin) balance to symbolise matrimonial bliss and everlasting love ensuring that a newlywed couple will be blessed with luck, great fortune and achievement. Origin: Japan. Circa 1880.
