About this item
Leather bound Chinese Export traveling trunk
Bound in black leather with brass studs, a pair of brass carrying handles, the brass escutcheon with the remains of the red wax seal which would have proved it had not been tampered with in transit and brass ring pull to the lid, the iron lock has no key. The interior is lined in the original vivid red and gilt decorated paper.
Canton, circa 1820
These traveling trunks were made in China for the export market, usually made from camphor wood to repel the insects, the brass studs are both decorative and reinforce the leather.
Condition: A very well preserved example which does not show signs of too much travel, all the brass studs are complete, internally the red lining paper is bright and complete, it is a little wrinkled in places and with the odd chip around the lock.
