About this item
Large Colorful Water Pitcher ANIMALS
Elsmore & Forster Staffordshire England c1860
This is an irresistible transfer printed ironstone serving jug, probably made originally for a local tavern. It stands 7 1/2 inches tall x 9 inches across including the strap handle. Transfer printed in black with hand-painted high enamel paint and lustres and iron red rims.
This jug has fowl, horse cat, dog, squirrel, zebra, and a large grouping of theatrical Harlequin cloys and dancers. Wow !Animal images printed on jugs are uncommon. The pitcher was decorated using old theatrical and chap book engravings which they transfer printed in different combinations.
The pitcher is a heavy piece with some roughness to the end of the spout and and two old staple repairs to the handle by those who loved it. It comes with a hand written card from grandfather describing the staple repair. An exceptional piece of history even with its issues.
