About this item
Pretty late 18th century Caughley porcelain cream jug. Tapered shape with fluted walls and scalloped rim. Decorated in mazarine blue with overglaze gilding in a "Dresden Flowers and border" type pattern.
Marked to the base with the blue S, c.1790. This shape is illustrated in Caughley & Worcester Porcelains" by Godden, plates VII and 75 and this pattern is illustrated in plate 100 and 114. It is noted that the gilding was probably done by Chamberlains in an agreement between the 2 businesses to outsource some of the decoration.
It measures 12cm (4 3/4") spout to handle, 8cm (3 1/8") rim to rim and 7.5cm (3") high.
Condition is good; there is a short hairline running down the right side of the spout. Inside there is a small loss of glaze at the rim and also a loss of the surface glaze at the same point on the other side. A little wear to the gilding on the tips of the rim and at a few spots along the inner blue border. No restoration. An unusual and pretty piece and perfectly usable with a little care.
