About this item
A nice Chelsea porcelain deep oval dessert dish decorated with feather moulding to the rim, edged in gilt, and picked out in a cyan enamel. The main central decoration in bright enamels of fruit and vegetables and around the edge, butterflies, berries, plums and apples. Gold anchor mark to the back, c.1760-1765.
It measures 27cm (10 5/8") wide, 20.5cm (8 1/8") deep and 4.5cm (1 3/4") high.
Condition: there is a firing crack that runs across the middle of the base to one side. The decorating artist tried to partly disguise it with a carrot in purple enamel which has now worn some towards the bottom. No other damage or restoration. The remnants of some slight chipping to the foot rim that was ground down at manufacture. No chips to the rim. Some surface crazing in the glaze and a few spots of associated discolouration. A bit of wear to the enamel towards the carrot side of the central decoration but little elsewhere although there are a few knife scratches. There is also a small bruise to the rim by the fly which appears from the edge to potentially be a re-glued chip but on close inspection is fully attached and just a small sideways crack. A little bit of wear to the gilding in places.
