About this item
Introduction to Yixing teapots
Yixing teapots, known for their unglazed zisha clay, have been prized in China for centuries. They were first developed in the 15th century, but naturalistic and sculptural forms flourished in the late Qing and Republic periods. These teapots were used not just for brewing, but also as objects of refined taste and scholarly culture.
Description of the teapot
This example features the distinctive bark-effect body associated with early 20th century studio production, a style inspired by the tradition of tree trunk vases and naturalistic wares from the Qing dynasty. The spout and handle are sculpted to resemble knotted branches, while sprigs of plum blossom wrap around the body in applied relief.
The plum blossom, or mei hua, is one of the “Three Friends of Winter” in Chinese art, symbolising endurance and renewal. The mark impressed inside the lid bears two Chinese characters which appear to be a maker’s name, though a precise attribution remains uncertain.
The reddish-brown zisha clay has been left unglazed, allowing for the classic patina associated with well-used Yixing pots. The overall design reflects both the technical mastery and symbolic depth Yixing production, even flourishing today.
Condition
There are two chips on the inside of the lid, some surface wear, otherwise in good condition.
Why You Should Buy
It’s a sculptural, richly symbolic piece that still invites use, touch, and quiet appreciation.
