    About this item

A very fine late 18th century Derby Royal Flute twin handled caudle cup and saucer of waisted form in the "Meissen" or "Tournai" shape with shaped rim, the cup with entwined handles. Both exquisitely painted with fine garden flowers of varying types, strawberries, cherries and plums and finished with a gilt dentil rim and gilt details to the handles. Both pieces with an early crown over D mark, the cup in purple, the saucer in puce, c.1780.

Reference: A Compendium Of British Cups, Berthoud, plates 75 and 76.

    The cup measures 7cm (2 3/4") high, 9.5cm (3 3/4") rim to rim and 14.5cm (5 3/4") across the handles. The saucer measures 4.3cm (1 3/4") deep and 15cm (5 7/8") wide.

Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration and minimal surface wear. There is a line in the glaze under the base of the saucer, but it is only glaze level. There are also 2 very short firing lines at the edge of the saucer in the niches of the flutes, they barely extend beyond the gilt and original to the piece.
