About this item

Introduction to James Dudson

James Dudson was a key figure in the British pottery industry, contributing to the legacy of the Dudson family business, which was established in 1800 in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Originally producing a range of ceramics, including earthenware, jasperware, and ironstone, the company adapted to the growing demand for durable tableware in the late 19th century. By the 1880s, James Thomas Dudson shifted the focus to vitrified china designed for hotels and restaurants, ensuring the company’s reputation for strong, high-quality ceramics.

Description of the Pitcher

This jasperware lidded pitcher, dating to around 1890, is a finely crafted example of neoclassical ceramic. Made from unglazed stoneware, its smooth matte blue body is adorned with applied white relief decorations, a hallmark of jasperware craftsmanship.

The pitcher features a continuous frieze of classical figures in flowing robes, some holding lyres while others stand in contemplative poses. Additional elements include festoons and anthemion motifs. The hinged pewter lid, complete with a decorative thumb-piece.

There are visible signs of wear on the pewter lid, with some patina and minor surface marks, while the ceramic body remains well-preserved, retaining its crisp relief and fine detailing.

Why You Should Buy

A great piece from a time when the neoclassical style was at its height. It’s impressive how well it has held up after more than a century, still looking just as refined today.
