    About this item

Gustavsberg wall plaque designed by Börje Skohg (1923 – 2006)

This is an original piece of broken off Saggar, which is a ceramic boxlike container, used in the firing of pottery to enclose or protect wares being fired inside a kiln from direct contact with flames, and from damage by kiln debris.

An early piece, innovatively, Skohg has designed and applied a school of nine silver paste metal toothed fish with a much larger predatory toothed fish turning in pursuit. The surface has then been varnished to prevent tarnishing.

The reverse side of the plaque has a leaded or resinous applied holder to hang the artwork, with the remains of a Gustavsberg label on the surface. Lower down, ink applied identification ‘Gustavsberg SKOHG’

Börje Skohg went on become one of Sweden’s leading ceramic artists in the 20th Century. After his art studies at Konstfack – University of Arts and Crafts, Stockholm, he worked in the Gustavsberg factory for 40 years.

This mid-century wall plaque is an original piece of artwork from Börje Skohg who was a prominent designer of wall plaques with people and animals as a core theme.
