About this item
A very nice barrel or ovoid shaped Derby porcelain mug with grooved strap handle and finely painted in enamels with a large spray of garden flowers and wheat ears to one side and smaller floral sprays to the front and other side. Finished with a maroon brown enamel rim. c.1760.
Reference: similar mugs of this shape and form are illustrated in Derby Porcelain by Rice, plate 106 and Twitchett, plates 36-38.
Provenance: ex-Dennis G. Rice Collection.
It measures 15cm (5 7/8") high and 11.5cm (4 1/2") wide across the body and can hold 1 litre / just over 1 1/2" pints.
Condition is very good. There is a small hairline to the base which is discoloured on the inside. The mug remains watertight. There is also a small chip on the inside of the foot rim which was itself ground level in manufacture. No other damage or restoration and very light handling wear; the enamels are all in good order bar some inevitable wear to the brown line on the rim. There are a scattering of firing spots inside the walls.
