About this item
A striking English Art Deco handpainted china basket or bowl by Myott & Sons Ltd, Circa 1930s. This large and rare piece of vintage tableware has been hand painted with jazzy coloured fruit to the sides, green and brown internally and an orange ribbon shaped handle. A good size, this bowl is perfect for everything from bread to fruit, but is striking enough to display as it is.
Myott, Son & Co operated originally from the Alexander Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, in the North of England. It was a family run business producing earthenware from 1898. Run by two brothers, Ashley and Sydney Myott, the company was particularly successful into the Art Deco Era.
Their geometric shapes are highly sought after, with brown and orange the predominant colours used in decoration. There were also a number of collaborations in the 1930s most notably with Goldscheider (an Austrian figure and wall mask producer) and B.A.G Co. Ltd (British American Glass). These Deco pieces display the famous gold Myott crown mark on the base.
Sadly there was a fire at their factory in 1949 in which many of the office files were destroyed, including vital pattern information.
